Lululemon Is Breaking Into Footwear With A New Design From Industry Heavy Hitters From Nike And Adidas. See What The Sneaker Could Look Like.

A design patent awarded to Lululemon on Tuesday gives an early hint at what the brand's eagerly awaited footwear could look like.

Drawings included with the patent show the bottom of a shoe that appears to form half of the Lululemon logo, suggesting that a pair of shoes would form the complete logo. It also appears to be Lululemon's first footwear patent.

The company did not respond to requests for comment.

In 2019, CEO Calvin McDonald announced the yoga-inspired apparel company planned to get into footwear. Little has been said publicly about Lululemon's footwear plans since then.

On an earnings call in March, McDonald said the company was "building toward the early 2022 launch of our technical footwear."

The Portland Business Journal reported in June that Lululemon leased a sizable office for its footwear division in Portland, Oregon, home to some of the industry's biggest brands, including Nike. The story noted Lululemon has hired numerous industry veterans to staff the office, including executives who previously worked for Nike, Adidas, and Under Armour.

Kenneth Anand and Jared Goldstein, attorneys and co-authors of "Sneaker Law", said the new patent suggests Lululemon is confident the design will be a hit. Many sneaker designs never get patented due to the expense and time involved.
